Matter, Thread, and Zigbee are often presented as alternatives. That can be misleading: Matter describes how compatible devices and ecosystems work together, while Thread and Zigbee are low-power network technologies.
Matter is the common language
Matter can run over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread depending on the device type. A Matter logo tells you to investigate cross-platform support, but it does not promise identical features in every app. Read the specific device's supported functions and controller requirements.
New Matter versions expand device categories, but a standard's release does not mean every app and product supports that category immediately. Always check the combination you intend to use.
Thread is a network path
Thread is an IP-based, low-power mesh. A Thread border router connects that mesh with the rest of your home network. It may be built into a smart speaker or other hub. Having a Thread device alone does not guarantee that your chosen app can commission it.
Zigbee also uses a low-power mesh, typically organized around a coordinator or brand hub. Its devices are not automatically Matter devices; some bridges expose selected Zigbee accessories to Matter platforms.
Choose by the complete setup
If you already own a compatible Thread border router, a Matter-over-Thread sensor can be a good fit. If you have an established Zigbee network, another compatible Zigbee sensor may be simpler. For a single mains-powered device, Wi-Fi may be enough. Compare the whole chain from radio to controller to app before buying.
